In the initial stages, Diabetic Retinopathy may be asymptomatic (have no symptoms). As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:
- Spots or dark strings floating in your vision (floaters)
- Blurred vision
- Fluctuating vision
- Impaired colour vision: The severity of impaired colour vision increases as retinopathy increases and with the presence of Diabetic Macular Edema. Diabetics prior to the development of Diabetic Retinopathy can also experience a loss in colour vision 7 .
- Dark or empty areas in your vision
- Vision loss
The primary symptom of Diabetic Macular Edema is blurry or wavy vision in or near your central field of vision. Colours may also appear washed out or faded. As the disease progresses symptoms may include patches of vision loss.
